Why Apples & Art?

The Seaway Valley, "Where Ontario began" is not only known for it's heritage and artists, but is home for one of nature's works of art, "The McIntosh Red" apple, at it's peak during this fall studio tour.

The "McIntosh" was discovered by homesteader John McIntosh while clearing his land in Dundela, Ontario. He christened it the "McIntosh Red".

The original tree was partially burnt when the McIntosh home caught fire in 1894. The tree survived and continued to bear fruit until 1906. The Mac is still grown in Dundela in Smyth's Orchards from 90 yr old trees grafted from the first tree. Famous throughout the world, every "McIntosh Red" descends from that very first tree discovered in Deundela in 1830.

So, while on tour, sample the apple fare provided by Smyth's Apple Orchards and enjoy a piece of our local history at the same time. ENJOY!
